Yesterday was roller coaster ride. As I mentioned, Jill was going to go through a group of tests to try to determine what may have caused this event. The first two were tests where two different stimuli injected into Jill's system to see of they generated a response that might point the doctors to what may have happened. One of these was adrenaline and the other was a medical term that someone who didn't write it down on a piece of paper wouldn't remember. Neither of these had any effect on Jill which crossed them off the list of potential causes.
The ablation, that I briefly discussed yesterday, was the third and final test before the doctor would finalized the decision to put the defibrillator pacemaker in. An ablation is the process of putting a catheter with a wire in it into a vein, guiding it up to the heart and then sending charges to various parts of the heart to see if there is a reaction from the charge. The cardiologist performed this test on Jill and moved through the different areas of her heart without finding too much. He then moved to one of her ventricles, sent a charge and she went into cardiac arrest again, similar to what happened on the baseball field. The doctors got her heart going again with the electric jolt of the paddles they keep on hand in case this happens. This was very scary to here to after the fact but she was revived without any noticeable damage. This event confirmed that there was no other option than to put the defibrillator pacemaker in. Later that afternoon, the cardiologist did the implant and Jill came out of surgery at about 4:30 yesterday afternoon.
She had a very difficult day. The long term outlook however is very positive. She feels like she has been hit with a baseball ball in the chest due to the surgery but is now in full recovery mode. The recovery is going to be slow. The doctors say she won't be able to lift her arm above the shoulder for six weeks, can't drive for a couple weeks and has put a fair number of other restrictions on her which will be a challenge in themselves. Regardless of all these restrictions, the great thing is that she will be coming home soon. It will be good to get her out of the hospital and into her own bed so she can get some sleep and get her strength back. It seems like it been an eternity since this whole thing started, and Jill has been through so much, but now there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.

Steve---Thanks so much for the posting the update and letting so many of us take a breath again. Fantastic news that she will be able to leave the hospital soon and get back home. Make sure she gets all the pain relief that the doctors are comfortable providing. Don't let her try to "tough it out."
ReplyDeleteStay strong!
Once again, sitting at my desk simply floored by all of this. Hise-mo, you must be exhausted. Jill, I can't even imagine. Hang in there. - Hoot
ReplyDeleteOh, Hise . . thank you for the definition of "Ablation". My dictionary came from the 99cent Store and ended at "Ab".
ReplyDeleteSteve, Jill and family, it sounds like you have found the best medical care! I'm glad they were quick in finding the areas of concern. Now off to a final recovery and home!! Jill,
ReplyDeleteRoad to recovery...what a blessing to hear this! We cannot imagine the mental and physical trauma your poor bod has experienced this last week. If anyone can pull through this thing...it's you! Iron Woman Jill! Let others help...it gives us a way to show you how much you mean to us. Also, it gives us an outlet for our feelings of helplessness. Thank you for your friendship and for everything you do for so many others. It's our turn to help you now. Love, the Crowells
Jill and Steve,
ReplyDeleteThere's a prayer network activated in Wisconsin for you. We are thinking of you and the kids. Love to you all, Amy
Hi Jill and Steve,
ReplyDeleteKatherine passed this along to me, what a shock! It sounds like things are looking up, many prayers for healing and recovery. This is a tough way to get back in touch after so many years. And prayers for your children, it can't be easy on them either. It will be nice for Jill to get home to her own bed soon!!!
Cheers, Becky McFadden

ReplyDeleteOne week after this terrible incident and I can say I have learned the following: a) we are incredibly lucky and grateful that Jill is still with us, b) Jill is even stronger than I ever imagined, c) Steve's brought new inspiration to the marital concepts of "love and honor", d) blog is no longer a four-letter word in my world e) there are people in our lives that really care about us, even when we don't see 'em that much (and vice-versa), f) I really do need to go see the doctor more regularly, and g) it's a beautiful day to be alive, no matter what the weather's like outside. May Week 2 begin with Jill gaining strength and getting ever closer to being home again!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a week! Jill, if you want me to come over to stay with you while Steve ferries the kids to school/sports, just say the word. I can change dressings, clean house, cook, bar the door from visitors, and make you behave!! :) I have a lot of sick leave to use up before I retire!! Just say the word, Jill, and I'm there. Thom is also available anytime to drive the kids around. It would give him something to do! But until you say the word, we'll leave you alone. Love and hugs to ALL who have been through this with you.
ReplyDeleteHey Jill, we're so glad to hear that you'll be coming home. You've been in our thoughts and prayers all week. Get lots of rest in the next couple of weeks and know that we're here to help you and Steve out with anything you need.
ReplyDeleteDoug and Sharon

ReplyDeleteIt seems like the just the other day I was watching Hise sing Journey "Separate Ways" in his Camaro. Now he's become an unbelievable Father and Husband. Fortunately, he was smart enough to find an Incredibly strong fighter for a wife and mother.. Jill and Steve the Greeps are very happy that things are moving in a positive direction, May God Bless both of you.. By the Way Gledhill said it perfectly!!!
ReplyDeleteJill - The best news I heard all week long was from this blog (I was follower #22 but I couldn't post until Coach Steve said it was OK). Way To Go! Problem solved, and now we recover. We are wishing you the best and we are thinking of you every day. Be patient, these things take time. But we do need you back at the baseball field, I saw Trent on saturday and his catcher's gear was on wrong, and Jackson had complete control of the whole (home field) bleacher. We miss you, see you soon.
ReplyDeleteP.S. - Is it true the cardiologist is from USC?
P.S.S. - I will wear a UCLA Jersey to the first game you can make it to.
Love Don & Cynthia
Jim Gled - you couldn't be more right!
